How AFF Skydiving works
How do you learn to skydive?
The AFF skydiving course consists of one full day of theory on the ground and 9 jumps or AFF stages. At Airlie Beach Skydivers you can choose to complete the course at your own pace or an all-inclusive course with accommodation.

1. AFF ground course
We begin with a single day of ground training where you’ll get the basics of skydiving equipment, freefall, and how to land a parachute safely. You’ll learn everything you need to know to complete your AFF skydives safely.
We also offer an online platform with theory that you can access before the course. This is a helpful way to get familiar with the program, making the first day less overwhelming, especially if you haven’t tried Tandem Skydiving before.

2. AFF Stages 1 to 9
After completing the ground course, you’ll be all set for your initial skydive. Two instructors will provide instructions and guide you through the procedures for AFF Stage 1. They’ll support you during freefall until it’s time to open the parachute. You’ll use your own gear and parachute. If you’re not feeling entirely confident, you can opt to jump with a tandem instructor for your first skydive.
Following that, there are eight more stages, from AFF Stage 2 to Stage 9. At each stage, you’ll acquire new skills to enhance your ability to control and stay aware while in freefall. By the time you reach Stage 9, you’ll be ready to take your very first solo skydive without any instructors accompanying you.

3. 'A licence' course
After finishing AFF Stage 9, you won’t need help from instructors anymore, but you’re still a student. You can do solo jumps or begin the “B-rels,” which are a series of jumps with a coach to learn group skydiving with 2, 3, or 4 people.
Once you’ve done 25 skydives, you can take the A licence exam to get your first official rating. With your skydiving ‘A’ licence, you’ll no longer be considered a student, and you’re now a certified skydiver. Time to celebrate!
